Tokyo DisneySea became the second of the two theme parks at Tokyo Disney Resort when it opened in September 2001. The park was popular right from the start, becoming the fastest theme park in the world to reach the 10 million visitors mark. Now, it is the fourth-most-visited theme park in the world, with about 14.7 million visitors in 2018.
Closure extended until further notice due to the coronavirus situation.
Similar to Tokyo Disneyland, there are seven themed areas throughout the park, however, at Tokyo DisneySea, they are called “Ports of Call”. The park entrance is located at Mediterranean Harbour, from which you can reach the other six: Arabian Coast, American Waterfront, Lost River Delta, Mermaid Lagoon, Mysterious Island, and Port Discovery. Each themed land has different rides and attractions, and some of the themed lands are based on a specific Disney movie, such as Mermaid Lagoon (based on The Little Mermaid). Some of the most popular rides include Nemo & Friends SeaRider, Indiana Jones Adventure: Temple of the Crystal Skull, and Toy Story Mania!.
Interestingly, while Tokyo Disneysea is easily child-friendly, the park was designed to attract more adult visitors. Alcohol is sold, and there are more sitdown restaurants than at the neighboring Tokyo Disneyland.
Many of the attractions and rides have the option to Fastpass", which allows you to scan your ticket, and get a specific time slot at which you should come back so you can visit other attractions instead of waiting in line. Once your estimated time comes, wait in a short (about 5 minutes) long line before enjoying the ride. The “Fastpass” option is free to use, and the attractions which the “Fastpass” option is available are clearly marked on park maps. However, there are only a certain number of time slots available, so make sure you arrive soon after the park opens to get your desired time slot. Popular rides tend to run out of time slots within an hour of the park opening.
There are 37 restaurants serving a wide variety of cuisines spread throughout the seven themed areas. Note that the cost of admission does not cover any food (or other expenses) in the park, so be sure to bring extra money for food (about ¥3,000, give or take accordingly).
Tickets are sold as 1, 2, 3, or 4-day packages. There are also discount tickets available for arriving after 15:00 (3pm) on weekends and holidays or after 18:00 (6pm) on weekdays. Discounts are also available for juniors (ages 12-17), children (ages 4-11), and seniors (ages 65+). See the website for more details on the prices of the discount tickets.
