19番を出ると、遍路道は再び山へと向かう。勝浦川を遡っていくと、生比奈の集落にでる。ここから山道の始まりだ。遍路ころがしのように険しくはないが、M字のようにアップダウンを繰り返す。それぞれの頂点にあるのが、20番札所（鶴林寺）と21番札所。間を繋ぐ「鶴林寺道」と「かも道」は、1300年代半ばの丁石（道標）が残る遍路最古の古道だそうだ。
