Winter evenings in Tokyo take on a special atmosphere in Shinjuku, and this season the area becomes even more captivating with the Shinjuku Neon Walk, part of the broader TOKYO NIGHTTIME PROJECT. Designed to bring new life to the city after dark, this large-scale illumination event transforms the streets of Nishi-Shinjuku into an open-air gallery of light, sound, and digital art.

Set along the Chuo-dori pedestrian route, the illuminated walkway is divided into several themed zones. Visitors can stroll beneath softly glowing "Light Seeds" that resemble drifting stars, pass through a radiant gateway inspired by traditional Edo-era rituals, and discover neon installations displaying lucky New Year phrases that double as memorable photo spots. An interactive AI-powered artwork by digital artist Daito Manabe allows visitors to see their own reflections transformed in real time, adding a highly personal touch to the experience.

Sound also plays an important role in shaping the atmosphere. Ambient music by composers including Yuka Kitamura accompanies the light installations, subtly enhancing the mood as visitors move through each zone.

On select evenings, themed food trucks appear along the route, serving dishes inspired by Edo-period culture as well as local Shinjuku flavors. A digital map and stamp rally further encourage travelers to explore multiple illumination spots throughout the neighborhood, turning an evening walk into a fun sightseeing activity.

The season reaches its peak on New Year's Eve with a special countdown event featuring large-scale projection mapping by visual artist Mika Ninagawa, along with live performances. Please see the location map below for where the illuminations will be set up.
