Step-Up Challenge 2025

Raising awareness for mental health

Date
Sep 10th - Oct 10th 2025

Since 1973, TELL has been helping the foreign community in Japan with difficult topics, such as mental illness, isolation, and suicide prevention. Recently, amid the COVID-19 crisis, its aid has been more crucial than ever as suicide numbers rise across the country.

The annual Step-Up Challenge is a great way for the community to give back to TELL and fundraise for this amazing NPO. So, what is the Step-Up Challenge and how can you help?

The challenge

September 10 is World Suicide Prevention Day; sadly, every year, more than 21,000 people in Japan commit suicide. That’s a huge number, far larger than it should be. The Step-Up Challenge honors those lives by walking 21,081 steps in one day—that’s almost 12 kilometers (7.5 miles).

The challenge aims for participants to choose one day to walk; however, you can spread the 21,081 steps across multiple days or even split the steps with friends. It all depends on your physical abilities.

The benefits

By entering the charity walk and paying the ¥1,500 entry fee, you will directly make a difference and save lives. The money helps TELL keep its Lifeline open 24/7 and ensures those most at risk get the help they need.

Even if you’re unable to walk, you can participate in a way that’s meaningful to you. The TELL event page has wonderful suggestions, including writing a story in 21,081 words or characters. It’s up to you to flex your creativity and raise awareness.

Entry

Whether you participate as an individual (¥1,500) or group of four (¥6,000) in the corporate, school, or community cups, you’ll be raising awareness and funds that directly help TELL and those it supports.

Can’t participate but still believe in the cause? No problem. You can still donate to support the Step-Up Challenge.
